The Best Posture Is The Next Posture

Those that know me know I am a believer in good posture.

My current definition of good posture is something like this…a body whose joints ‘stack’ up well against gravity and that moves freely throughout the entire range of motion at each joint under any movement pattern.

I use gait or how we walk as an indicator of ‘posture’ during movement.

The more efficient we move the more energy used for more important things like our brain.

Posture also can have an effect on our mood.

But when pain comes into play posture becomes quite interesting.  Poor posture (or what we often think of as poor posture) does not equal pain.  Pain is another beast all together so let’s save that for another blog post…or a 1000 posts.

But for now let’s just take a look at posture from a ‘mechanical lens.’

If you were to slouch your spine all day, every day then you will become slouched.  Your tissues will begin to shorten in the front of your body and lengthen in the back. It’s likely you will feel tension along your spine and even in those front parts of your body.  Standing straight will be difficult and breathing becomes more of a challenge.  Even your organs won’t have room to move (yes, your liver and intestines like to move too).  You might even start to have some pain.

Now what could you have done to prevent this from happening?

The answer is quite simple and you probably won’t find it in Rocket Scientist Digest.

You’re right…don’t slouch all day!!!

The body loves to move and does not want to stay in the same place for a long period of time.

That’s why the best posture is the next posture!!

Avoid tension, decreased energy, and potential pain by moving more frequently.

If you work at a desk, get up and take a quick walk around the cubicle, while at your desk sit up tall and raise your arms overhead and take a big stretch while breathing deeply.

Move your body in whatever way feels good…just move it…and move it…and move it in as many fun, feel good ways as you can.

Here at Body Evolution Physical Therapy & Wellness we believe in moving well to keep healthy.
